The girls of Herat returned to school this week, only a few days after the Taliban conquered the city in northwestern Afghanistan: the French news agency AFP reports on the basis of a video taken by one of its cameramen in the Village. The female students, filmed as they enter a local school and chat in the institute’s courtyards, seemingly unaware of the situation around them, are wearing white hijabs and black tunics. These are very different scenes from Afghanistan in the 1990s, when the Taliban imposed a fundamentalist version of the sharia law, which largely denied education and work to women. “We want to progress like other countries”, said a student, Roqia: “And we hope that the Taliban maintain security. We don’t want war, we want peace in our country.”
