For days she feared for her life and that of her husband, but now the worst seems to be behind her: Nilofar Bayat, captain of the Afghan Paralympic women’s basketball team, was evacuated this morning from Kabul on a flight organized and managed by Spain. This was confirmed by the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, in an interview granted to radio Cadena Ser.
It is the response of the Iberian country to the appeals launched in recent days by the athlete on social media through a friend of the Spanish journalist, Antonio Pampliega. Appeals which were then echoed by several people to get them to the authorities responsible for the evacuations from Afghanistan.
The Spanish military plane on which Bayat was taken away along with 109 other people from Kabul made a stopover in Dubai.
It has not yet been officially announced when he will leave for Spain. But in the meantime, at least two Spanish basketball clubs have already offered to welcome the athlete upon his arrival and include him in their teams, the Iberian media reported.
