– ROME, AUG 12 – New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the country’s borders will remain closed at least until the end of the year because the priority now is to vaccinate the entire population and keep economic activities open. The BBC reports it.
New Zealand is considered one of the countries that has best managed the coronavirus pandemic, with only 26 deaths out of a population of just under five million people.
“We are simply not able to fully reopen yet,” Ardern said speaking at a forum devoted to ‘Reconnecting New Zealand to the world’. The premier also anticipated that when the country reopens next year, vaccinated travelers from low-risk areas will be able to enter without quarantine, while other risks will have to self-isolate or stay in quarantine for 14 days.
