– LISBON, AUGUST 17 – Hundreds of Portuguese firefighters are still busy taming a forest fire that broke out yesterday morning in the south of the country, which has already forced the authorities to evacuate about 60 people.
The fire hit the tourist region of the Algarve (south), on the border with Spain. The firefighters had managed to control the fire yesterday morning, but in the afternoon the flames started running again, extending for about 3,000 hectares.
“The fire is progressing with intensity,” said a local civil defense official. Meanwhile, a firefighter was hospitalized for burns, while two others received medical treatment on the spot for inhaling smoke from the flames.
As the fire progresses towards the coast, the authorities have closed the motorway that crosses the Algarve. In the face of persistent high temperatures, the government yesterday extended the state of alert in force since last Friday by 48 hours. (HANDLE).
