– CASERTA, 18 AUG – Two hundred hectares of woods and crops gone up in smoke, with all utilities damaged (water, gas, electricity) as well as the connecting roads, already affected by several landslides. And the real risk of a “new Sarno” due to the forthcoming heavy rains. These are the damages and dangers estimated by the mayor of Rocchetta and Croce (Caserta) Salvatore Geremia after the wood fire that took place over the weekend of August and died only today; Geremia asks for an urgent meeting with the president of the Campania Region Vincenzo De Luca.

The fire, in addition to damaging olive groves and vines, also destroyed two houses and seriously threatened the village nestled in the mountains of Alto Casertano, so much so as to force the mayor, between Saturday and Sunday, to evacuate the historic center.

When the emergency was over, Geremia then filed a complaint with the carabinieri complaining of more than four hours of delays in rescues, and accusing the Caserta Fire Brigade above all of inaction. In the meantime, the damage count and the estimation of the risks connected with the destruction of hundreds of trees have begun.

“The coming weather adversities – explains Geremia – will inevitably lead to the sliding downstream of the covering of the rocky layer, endangering the safety of the people and the places below. So what happened in Sarno will inevitably repeat itself”. (HANDLE).
