– REGGIO CALABRIA, AUGUST 19 – The rapid evolution of the fires that hit the Aspromonte, between the end of June and mid-August, was highlighted in a photographic sequence taken by the satellite and shows the areas devastated by the fire which, in particular in the week from 5 to 12 August, they caused 4 victims and the destruction of vegetated areas for an estimated area of ​​about 5,400 hectares.

The photographic and video animation processing of the images was carried out at the request of the Arpacal Scientific Directorate by the geologist Luigi Dattola of the Regional Center for Geology and Asbestos and will be transmitted to the Region and to the competent territorial bodies “as a useful knowledge element – is written in a note by Arpacal – for future territorial planning given that, according to national legislation, the municipalities affected by fires, in their territorial planning, will have to prohibit the areas affected by the fire from any urban planning activity for many years ” .

“Thanks to the visualization of large portions of territory with good spatial resolution – comments Dattola – satellites are now widely used for monitoring the territory.

These capabilities have made it possible, in a very short time even if not in real time, to visualize the evolution of the fires in Aspromonte in the first half of August. Using the Sentinel 2 satellites, which are part of the Copernicus project, ESA’s earth observation program, a sequence of images was developed that runs from 18 June to 12 August. The images depict the tragic sequence of events well and allow a quick visualization of the real front of the fire and its evolution over time.

Further elaborations, based on the infrared bands, allow a quick visualization of the areas crossed by the fire through the calculation of the NBR index. In these representations it is possible to recognize, at first glance, how the fires have spread, affecting increasingly large areas “. .
