– MADRID, AUGUST 18 – 85 years after his death, Spain remembers Federico García Lorca today, considered one of the greatest Spanish-speaking poets of all time.
García Lorca – author of memorable poetry collections for scholars of Spanish literature such as Romancero Gitano or Poeta en Nueva York – was shot by exponents of Francoism in August 1936 (the date usually indicated is that of August 18 of that year) , one month after the start of the Spanish Civil War. His body has never been found: it is believed that he is buried in a mass grave in the area of Granada, his native province.
According to reports from the Efe news agency today, the niece of one of the people shot with him asked the European Court of Human Rights to authorize a new search for their remains, after the Spanish justice had opposed it.
Citing some of the verses of García Lorca, the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also paid homage to the figure of the great poet.
“85 years after his execution, his work, his legacy and his way of observing and understanding reality are still present,” he wrote on Twitter. (HANDLE).
