(ANSA-AFP) – ROME, AUGUST 19 – Two Brazilian clubs qualified for the Libertadores Cup semifinals: Atletico Mineiro beat Marcelo Gallardo’s River Plate 3-0 in Belo Horizonte yesterday and Flamengo did it himself outclassing Olimpia (5-1).
In Atletico Mineiro, who had already won 1-0 in Buenos Aires in a first leg match that ended with accidents, Hulk was the author of the decisive pass on the first goal of Argentine Matías Zaracho (22 ‘). The 35-year-old Brazilian international doubled (34 ‘) after a quick counterattack that ended with a great shot. It is his seventh goal this season in the Libertadores, three behind the top scorer, Gabriel Barbosa, aka ‘Gabigol’, of Flamengo. Zaracho then delivered the coup de grace (62 ‘) with a header.
Atletico Mineiro will thus play Libertadores’ first semi-final against Palmeiras since 2013, the year of their only victory in the South American Champions League. Flamengo will meet the winner of the last quarter-final in the semifinal, between Fluminense and Ecuadorian club Sc Barcelona: the return is scheduled for tomorrow, after the first leg in Brazil ended with a 2-2 draw.
