Piazza del Giglio, located in the historic center of Lucca, will soon undergo a major restoration project. The construction work will begin on November 20th and involves the complete renovation of the pavement. The new pavement will consist of a layer of concrete covered with an architectural concrete surface with washed gravel, giving it a natural appearance similar to asphalt but more resistant and durable. The stone frames around the square will also be redone. In order to enhance the pedestrian function of the square, retractable barriers and cast iron vases will be installed. In addition, recessed spotlights will be placed and a new lighting system will be created for the monument dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi. The restoration project, which is expected to be completed by April of next year, is funded entirely by the Municipality of Lucca with 600,000 euros. The construction work will not disrupt the monthly antique market, as it will start right after the event on November 18-19. However, for subsequent events, the market stalls will be temporarily relocated to Piazza Bernardini until the restoration is completed.
