Maria Talarico, a lawyer and president of the “Boccherini” Conservatory in Lucca, was on vacation in Israel with her family when the recent conflict broke out. While they were in Bethlehem, they could still feel the impact of the war happening nearby. Talarico described the constant state of alert and the sound of sirens in Jerusalem, just 10 kilometers away. Despite the fear and uncertainty, Talarico and her family were safe and were able to visit Christian sites in Bethlehem. They were kept inside the sacred places until about 5 pm, presumably for safety. Talarico mentioned that there were many other groups of Christians from all over the world in Bethlehem. The only thing that struck her was the long lines of cars waiting to refuel at gas stations. The most unsettling moment for Talarico was when they heard the rocket explosions and alarm sirens at around 9,30 am. The rockets were coming from Gaza, but Talarico and her family were far enough away to be safe. They are planning to return home tomorrow and have already checked the flights, which were still departing, although the airport was closed to incoming flights.
