Adelchi D’Ippolito, former judge and head of a commission on professional medical malpractice, recently discussed the problems surrounding this issue at a conference in Siena. The aim is to provide peace of mind to doctors while ensuring complete legal protection for citizens. D’Ippolito highlighted the alarming fact that out of 100 complaints received, only 5 are successful, with approximately 95% being unfounded. This lack of serenity for medical professionals leads to defensive medicine, resulting in damage to the healthcare system and longer waiting lists. The discussion also focused on the concept of gross negligence and the level of responsibility doctors are held to. The president of the Siena Medical Association, Roberto Monaco, emphasized the need for more time to dedicate to patients and the importance of protecting health, society, and the constitution.
