Jawad Hicham, a 38-year-old Moroccan man, will stand trial this morning on charges of aggravated double murder and cohabitation. He is accused of stabbing to death his 35-year-old partner Sara Ruschi and her 76-year-old mother Brunetta Ridolfi in their apartment on Via Benedetto Varchi in April. He could face a life sentence if found guilty. Represented by lawyer Fiorella Bennati, Hicham will appear before the Assize Court in Arezzo. Due to the seriousness of the crimes, he is not eligible for any reduced sentence. However, he may request a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he was mentally competent at the time of the killings. The femicide occurred on the night of April 13, with the couple’s two children, aged 16 and 2, witnessing the attacks. Sara suffered around 15 stab wounds and died shortly after being taken to the hospital. Brunetta sustained fewer stab wounds, possibly after trying to protect her daughter. Hicham fled the scene and attempted to call for help from a telephone booth nearby. It was their older son who contacted emergency services to report the incident. The victims’ relatives and the children will join the legal proceedings as civil parties, along with the association “Senza veli sulla lingua” which fights against gender-based violence.
