Alberto Magnaghi, a renowned professor of Planning and Urbanism at the University of Florence, has passed away at the age of 82. He was an internationally recognized figure in Italian urban culture and local development. Magnaghi founded the Italian Territorialist School, which emphasized empathy with places and communities. He had a close relationship with the city of Prato, particularly through his work on the development of the Val di Bisenzio in 1999 and the Provincial Territorial Plan in 2003. He contributed to the creation of projects such as the Prato Agricultural Park and the enhancement of the territorial heritage. His 2012 study, “The Territory as a Source of Energy,” revealed sustainable ways to meet the province’s energy needs. Additionally, Magnaghi indirectly facilitated the establishment of Urban Planning courses at the University of Florence, which now have a suitable location in Prato. These courses are crucial for the city and its studies on territorial innovation.
