– ROME, AUGUST 17 – The secretary for the fight against Covid-19 of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, Rosana Melo, declared that the department is evaluating the possibility of administering a third dose of the vaccine in patients with low immunity, on example of what is happening in the United States, mainly due to the expansion of the Delta variant.
“We have some preliminary studies, but these studies have not been published,” Melo specified during a meeting of the Temporary Commission of Covid-19 at the Senate.
During the hearing, the Sergio Arouca School of Public Health researcher Margareth Dalcomo acknowledged that some groups, such as the elderly, people with disabilities and health care workers, may need to be strengthened.
“We had stopped hospitalizing elderly patients and went back to hospitalizing them. The vast majority were vaccinated with CoronaVac,” said Margareth, raising doubts about the poor efficacy of the Chinese vaccine.
Meanwhile, elderly residents of Paquetà Island, off Rio de Janeiro, are already receiving the third dose of the vaccine as part of a study conducted by the Fiocruz Institute. (HANDLE).
