– LUSAKA, AUGUST 16 – The Zambian opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema, was declared the winner of the disputed presidential elections on Monday after winning over 2.8 million votes. “I declare Hakainde Hichilema elected president of the Republic of Zambia,” said the president of the electoral commission, Judge Esau Chulu in a televised speech.

Hichilema, 59, an entrepreneur who started from nothing but today heads a great personal fortune, thus reached the top of the state after six attempts, defeating his rival, the incumbent president Edgar Lungu with 2.8 million votes, almost a million more than the opponent.

Arrested fifteen times since entering politics, he spent four months in solitary confinement for ‘treason’ after blocking a presidential convoy just after the 2016 election.

His social media campaign was decisive for the victory.
