I professor Paolo Ferragina and Giovanni Manzini from the Department of Informatics at the University of Pisa have become the first Italians to win the prestigious international “Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award” and fourth in Europe. They were awarded the highest honor of the region, the Silver Gonfalon, for their achievement. The award recognizes their contribution to innovation through their creation of the FM-Index, a compressed index that supports quick searches in text using a much smaller space. They expressed gratitude to Tuscany for welcoming them in the past and emphasized the importance of encouraging young researchers.
