CGIL and SUNIA have highlighted the increasing housing crisis in the province of Siena, Italy. The number of eviction requests has risen by 148.5% in 2022, mainly due to tenants’ inability to pay rent, exacerbated by rising energy costs and inflation. The government has failed to allocate sufficient funds for rental assistance and has cut the income support program that helped with rent payments. The unions stress the need for a comprehensive housing plan that includes increasing public housing to meet the real needs of citizens. They also propose the creation of a housing agency to connect landlords and renters and incentivize the renovation of vacant properties for affordable housing. Additionally, they call for additional funding for rental assistance, the construction of 600,000 units of public housing, and the revision of tax regulations related to rentals. The unions assert that addressing the housing crisis is crucial for the social well-being of the country.
